WHAT IS NOUN ?

A Noun is a word that refers to a person, a thing, an animal, a place, a quality, or an activity

Form of Nouns

Words ending in such suffixes as -Ion , -sion, -tion, -ness, -ance, -ence, -ment, -ity are usually nouns

COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

  • Countable nouns refer to people or things that can be counted
    • Desk , house , teacher…
    • They are designers
  • Uncountable nouns refer to people and things that can not be counted
    • Ex : love, air..  
    • Ms. Parker comes from Canada

How to distinguish between singular and plural noun

  • When talking about just one person, animal, place or thing, we use singular countable nouns.
  • When talking about two or more people, animals, places and things, we have to make countable nouns plural.
  • Plural nouns usually end in –s
  • Ex
    • Singular : Document
    • Plural : Documents

SPECIAL CASES OF PLURAL NOUN

Special cases of plural noun

POSITION OF NOUN

Nouns can be : Objects, Subjects, Complements of Sentences

  • Subject
    • The location /is ideal/ for the office
  • Object
    • We /had/ a discussion/ about the news
  • Complement
    • Mr.Manning / is / a journalist

Note: Verbs and adjectives cannot come in where nouns should be.

Nouns basically follow articles, possessives, or adjectives

  • After an article
    • Mr. Cooper/ is the host/ of today’s seminar.
  • After a possessive
    • She / accepted / my advice
  • After an adjective
    • Our firm / underwent / remarkable changes

IDENTIFYING COUTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

Some countable noun may look like uncountable nouns and vice versa

  • Bulk purchases/ are eligible / for a discount
  • The technician / repairs / broken equipment

NUMERIC EXPRESSIONS BEFORE NOUNS

Numeric expressions before Nouns

Below are some numeric expressions that can come before countable and uncountable nouns

  • There were many people at the festival
  • This copier causes less trouble than the old one
